Preparing Your Garden for the Winter Months

Reviving Your Gardens Outlook.

Having a complete overhaul of your gardens’ aspect, maintenance like this is an essential part of keeping your personal environment looking its best for the year to come.

Preparation is the key, hard work now will pay off and make this easier for next year when you want to be out enjoying your garden not working harder on it. All the work will help maintenance for the future and maintain a healthy tidy aspect for the winter months ahead. At Hinckley Garden Care we believe its better to be prepared.

Things To Think About.

LAWNS : Don’t cut your grass to short for the winter as this exposes the roots and leaves it vulnerable to root and disease. Clear falling leaves and cut grass by lightly racking or scarifying (de-thatching) the lawn which help to lift the lawn and dry it out on those shorter sunny periods. Maintain a good feed using a good all year round feed or one that is slightly higher in potassium, it may not be to late to seed any patches, but once there is a frost it may not take.

HEDGES : This may be a good time to get the years final hedge cut in as once bird and other wildlife start to shelter down for the winter, it is important not to disturb their habitat. A quick trim now will keep it tidy for the winter getting rid of the summers growth and encourage new growth next year.

GARDEN FURNITURE / KIDS TOYS : A good idea is to cover over the patio set, move the kids toys off the grass each day and pop the cover over the BBQ, it stops items rusting and getting to dirty over winter and protects them from the frosts and rain fall.

PLANTS AND BORDERS : All plants that like the warmer climate should be potted and put in the green house by now or in the next few weeks. Borders need to be kept well weeded and winter shrubs well bedded, adding colour to the rusty look of your garden. Start to cut back those rose bushes, remove dead leaves and trim back all the plants back to a good size, if your unsure how to look after something in your garden, ask at a garden centre or look on GOOGLE, we are all here to give help and advice were we can.

WASTE DISPOSAL : At this time of year, doing all this work can produce more Green Waste than usual, so use your brown bin or compost heap. A good way is to use the local tips or begin thinking about a fire or building one for bonfire night (remember to observe good fire safety & check for wildlfe nesting if you do this) also respect your neighbours.

SLUGS, SNAILS AND PUPPY DOG TAILS : A prime time for slugs, snails and worms and such like, so keep up with your treatments. Remember to clear the dog waste more regularly to remove potential problems in the future. A good all year round or high potassium rate fertiliser may help recovery of a scorched lawn but plenty of hydration can often help with a quality fertiliser depending on your soil type (always best to seek advice on what may be the best products for you. Either with ourselves at Hinckley Garden Care or from your local garden centre near Hinckley / Leicestershire, please view our blog on local garden centres which may be able to assist you) always remember to read the labels and follow the guidelines and instruction.

CLEANING YOUR PATIO : Don’t forget to sweep up leaves, weed removal and maybe a spray clean to uproot any moss as this can prove very slippy in the wintery months. That goes for your decking to if you haven’t already treated it through the summer.

DRIVEWAY : If you have a stoned or paved driveway, regular Total Weed Kill (seek professional qualified advice before having this done) should be maintained as a part of regular maintenance to your property. At Hinckley Garden Care we are always happy to offer advice and service to help with your weed issues & offer a comprehensive treatment program.
